Puerto Rican intellectual Eugenio María de Hostos was born in the town of Mayagüez on January 11, 1839. He spent a large part of his life abroad, receiving his education in Spain and living in the Dominican Republic for several years. Renowned for his labor in the field of education, Hostos worked to reform the educational systems in Peru, Chile, and the Dominican Republic, promoting women’s education and founding the first Teachers College of Santo Domingo. Hostos also championed the cause of Cuban and Puerto Rican independence during the time immediately preceding the Spanish-American War, putting forth the idea of an independent Antillean Confederation consisting of Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico. He died in Santo Domingo, his second home, in 1903.
